Notice how fast the city council bans things and yet they cannot manage the important issues like the budget.
Hopefully some of those layoffs will affect 'tobacco control'.
Indeed, it would be interesting to see what happens to all of that tobacco control money............ .....Maybe they'll use it to ban more things...D'oh! ...then when the sh*t really hits the fan and council members (and their family and friends) start to lose THEIR jobs, then maybe they'll realize the mess that they've created. Unfortunately, it will have been too little, too late. ...Double D'oh! Then we'll have to start from scratch....ie., with a whole new schlew of politicians to see if we can get things back in order. Things will change eventually, but not before hitting the bottom first. Hurray for being optimistic:-)
I went to see Ringo get his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today (2-8-10). Joe Walsh and Ben Harper spoke. Sheila E. was also there but did not speak.
I got a good spot up front within 20 yards of the podium.
I waved at Ringo and he pointed back at me. A very nice man he is.
I was interviewed by Glen Walker Ch. 2/9. I was cut from the report.
The Mayor took the podium and was roundly booed by two-thirds of the crowd of about 400 spectators. Probably due to the proposed layoffs.
LaBonge took the podium and I was the only person who booed. Applause was polite but was from about one-third of the crowd. Two-thirds of the crowd remained silent. My boo was greeted with a few chuckles and no contradictions.
Eric Garcetti was announced as arriving late and in-transit. I booed the announcement while the entire crowd remained silent. My boo was greated with a few chuckles and no contradictions.
When Garcetti arrived there was zero response. He was seen and announced on arrival but the ceremony was over. He did not speak.
This demonstrates that two-thirds of the crowd booed the Mayor over his proposed layoffs. This probably means that those who booed the Mayor might support tax increases and are employed by the City.
I did get on Ch. 2 as one of the fans, but no interview.
I'm the old dude next to the guy in the blue cap holding the Ringo albums.
He didn't get an autograph though, and I'm pretty sure that's what he was after with the albums.
I pity anyone who has Councilman LaBonge as their rip...er Rep.
At 30:57 you can hear him proclaim, quote,
"and I must mention, my favorite song, by the late great Hoyt Axton, "The No-No Song".
Understand, this was a night for Ringo and I don't mean to politicize the event, but what the hell does LaBonge mean by that statement?
I've got family in the biz and they know my complaints about the bans, so maybe...?
If I am reading this article correctly - the text of the article doesn't technically match the title.
Quote:
Villaraigosa's budget team believes that at least 360 workers can be moved to posts unaffected by the budget crisis. Those jobs would be in agencies such as Los Angeles World Airports and the Department of Water and Power, which are not part of the general fund, which pays for basic services.
The mayor asked workers to volunteer by Monday if they were willing to quickly transfer. Under his timeline, transfers must be completed by Feb. 12, with workers beginning those new jobs by the following Monday.
As many as 723 other vacancies could be found in positions that have opened up because of the early retirement program, Villaraigosa said. However, personnel officials said they do not know the precise number of available vacancies.
Once those vacant positions are filled, City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana said, at least 100 workers could start receiving layoff notices.
And even that doesn't make any sense
360 + 723 (Job shifts) = 1083
100 COULD receive layoff notices
so that's 1183 jobs effected - with 100 that MAY/COULD receive layoff notices.
I don't see any 'cutting of the fat' here....and everyone knows there's a ton of fat in government positions.
A city as large as LA - MAY layoff 100 people?
Big freaking deal!
I betcha these job-shifts are going from union jobs to non-union and the Unions are in a tizzy about losing their dues-revenue....therefore the article.

The video won't play on my computer right now....Sounds like you had a fun night SW! As for the crowd booing the mayor and being silent during LaBonge's entrance, I think that it's just because a lot of people are unhappy in general with the way that L.A. is being run; most people probably don't even know who LaBonge is, but they know who Villaraigosa is, hence all of the booing.
